03/04/2008 4:05 PM Alert

This is an open email to all residence of Homestead, but it is directed mostly to the inhabitants of Thornberry Rd.

Every Tuesday and Friday I turn down your road to leave and go about my day, and every Tuesday and Friday i am met with a gauntlet of trash and recycling cans strewn about the street.  At first I was angry with the waste managment people, I though to myself,  (SELF "how inconsiderate that our local waste managment professionals would empty the trash and then just leave the cans in the road, dont they know this is a hazard?", but with further investigation i discovered to my dismay that in fact it was not the garbage men at all....it is acctually you, the resident who is purposefully placing your cans in the road, instead of on the sideway, which is the rightful home of all garbage cans waiting to be emptied.  So now for several weeks i have tried to ignore your inconsiderate and selfish ways, but last night was the last straw.

OPEN SCENE: Its very dark and there is a screaming baby in the backseat, and a bleary eyed mother at the wheel.

I was driving down your street at about 11 at night, when to my horror your trashcan was directly, and inexplicably  in the path of my vehicle, literally having been placed 2-3 feet into the road (that is intended to be used by motor vehicles...but I digress).  As a homeowner on this street im sure you are aware that Thornberry is a very poorly lit road, therefore i was forced in my already tired and frazzled state (I was already having a rough day, this is not your fault) to swerve to avoid hitting your inappropriately place trash recepticle (this is your fault).

CLOSE SCENE: The virginal ears of a sweet babe are sullied by much anger and cursing.

So here it is, after many weeks of frustration and stiffled ire i have finally had enough.  Henceforth, If you refuse to find a more approprate resting spot for your yet to be emptied trash/recycling can, dont be surprised to find that it may have suffured a horrible and untimely fate, as I can no longer garantee that your trash/recycling can will not have an unfortunate run-in with my Sports Utility Vehicle.  And though the very thought of "accidentally" comitting detriticide sends shivers down my spine, dont say I didnt warn you.

Sincerely,

Your Neighbor

P.S. Happy upcoming Easter

I love you Chubbison !!

As a Homestead resident myself, it's my understanding that the HOA requires trash cans be placed at the curb and not on the sidewalk.

That was my understanding too... although I really enjoyed reading your tale and am looking forward to next weeks adventure.

Why don't you you use a different street? Thornberry is not your only option!

There is still plenty of construction going on in the neighborhood - construction vehicles limit the room for a trash truck to be able to access the cans.

If you can't drive your suv down the street think how difficult it is to drive a vehicle 10 times as large.

With that said Ihave neighbors on both sides of me so my can is at the edge of the street and curb/ I left at 5 am this morning and had no problem driving my truck safely down Thornberry Lane.

I contacted the HOA Property Management Company, specifically Michael Woolington, to complain about the trash cans a few weeks ago. Not only are the cans out in the street, they are left out for a few days or just pushed up against the house all week. I finally had enough when my neighbor's can (which is pushed against the garage and left out all week) tipped over one windy day and his trash was strewn all over my yard.

We all need to take a little more pride in our neighborhood. Anewman, your comment rubbed me the wrong way. It is not up to the original poster to turn a blind eye and ignore inappropriate things going on in the neighborhood.

I hope that there are far more people in this neighborhood who care than turn a blind eye. Since we don't have a Board yet, contact Michael Woolington (mwoolington@associatedasset.com) with concerns.

We are paying HOA dues and we deserve to live in a neighborhood that we are not embarrassed of...

Its nice to see that the neighborhood I live is not the only one with inconsiderate and ignorant neighbors. I feel for you, really I do. Unfortunately there will always be people who think their actions don't affect anyone else. GOOD LUCK!!

I had that problem as well with my neighbor's garbage ending up in my yard as they would not move their can in for days and days.. What I did was collected up the garbage, and I put half of it back in my neighbor's back yard, and I took the other half, including some food items that ended up in my yard, and brought them to the management company's office. I did not tell them who I was, but told them the name and address of the garbage owner was in the bag with the food, so to please take care of it. My neighbor's cans are not out for days anymore.

Good luck with the HOA doing anything. We have been after them for months about some lion statues and naked lady fountain in a home in cactus cove. I have used the HOA website but all they say is that they are working on it. It is a huge joke. I do not know why we even pay dues.

Trash cans are supposed to be placed right at the curb on the street itself, 3ft out in the road is not good but right at the curb is perfect.

Streets are dark as they should be its all part of Maricopa's dark sky's policy. I for one love the dark sky's hope Maricopa truly sticks with that policy.

I think I may be on a different section of Thornberry than you. I do see people on my street that have the trash cans up against their garage because their garage is full from moving and their landscaping is not done yet. I do not believe it is fair to require people to place the cans in their garage or back yard since we got shafted with the gate to the backyard being at the rear of the house. What kind of crap is that!! I want my cans behind the gate but not right next to my ac unit!

I do have mine in the garage because I have a neighbor that has their front entry on the side of the house I would prefer to store the cans. I am not that inconsiderate. I also place mine up against the curb so they are not in the street but also not on the sidewalk.

My street is not even half full yet so I am more forgiving of people having HOA violations while settling in or dealing with construction.

I feel for you if the can tipped over and the trash blew into your yard but I would have gone the route of discussing it with the neighbor first rather than going on here and to the HOA. How many of your neighbors do you know? Maybe they would have felt real bad and made the change on their own.

Lets remember it is up to us to determine the community we live in. Meet your neighbors - do things together - discuss any issues and concerns you have with them. It will have more weight with the HOA if an entire street comes in with a unified voice compared to a couple people complaining about a couple others.

Personally I like the statues, they're tasteful and well done, and it's nice to see something not taco-decko here.  However, it should be approved via the HOA first, which they may be trying to work on getting it approved or come to an agreement of what is and is not acceptable before anything is done.

As for the trash cans, they should be on the street, not the sidewalk.  The purpose of the sidewalk is for people (more importantly children) to walk on opposed to the street where it's safer, not to block it off with trash cans.

Well apparently no one told the neighborhood children the sidewalk was for them...I nearly bounced a whole heard of them off my hood yesterday, while they were playing in the street.
OOOHH, I kid (hahaha, kid), I would never deliberately run down a child. On the otherhand I am still fed up with the trashcans, and may soon follow through on my last posting.
But on a more serious note, I do wonder if our phantom HOA has considered the fact that they are probably breaking public safety laws by allowing residence and according to some, requiring , that trashcans be placed in the road. As im sure that if an emergency vehicle had to report to our subdivision post-hast, they would be none too pleased with having to run the gauntlet of trashcans. (Just a thought)

Sincerely,

Your friendly Neighbor

P.S. Do you know where YOUR trashcan is ?

P.P.S Yes I know there are spelling/grammatical/typographical errors in this post, but its 12:30 at night and im too tired and lazy to care.

P.P.P.S. I love kids, I just cant eat a whole one.

I love you Chubbison !!
