This is not fair to real home owners to pick-up after vacant, foreclosed/ bank owned
homes. What is the HOA doing about this? Fines! Bill them for our servies?

We will provide the hamburgers/hotdogs and buns. What about drinks? BYOD?

Is it fair? Sadly, no.

If enough residents volunteer, we could take care of these eyesores in a few hours time.  It might even be fun to meet some of your neighbors.  We hope you join us.

p.s.  These properties are being fined; typically, these fines cannot be collected until the property sells (minimum of 1-2 years).

This is so funny...pay your money and we will let you clean up.

This is just like the mob, ...gives us your money, and we will let you clean up your neighborhood.

Don't pay your money and we will come down on you hard and make you pay...To CLEAN up your neighborhood.

Your dammed either way

I have a idea..Take all the money I pay and clean up the houses.

I have done everything to comply with the hoa.. They have done nothing, not even the lights in the park.

The lights have been installed in the park; they should be operational shortly.

The City of Maricopa and/or Maricopa Meadows are not the only ones suffering the effects of all of the foreclosures!  Read the article posted just today on AZ Central.

Foreclosures force HOAs to cut corners on upkeep http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2008/04/03/20080403hoas0403.html

I have two others in PDF format if you are interested....I was unable to find them online.

  1. HOAs take foreclosure hit....Associations are struggling to make ends meet
  2. HOAs get creative as foreclosures rise.....Solvency depends on volunteers, renegotiation

Quote:  Rising foreclosure rates are squeezing homeowners associations, leaving many in Chandler and across the Valley with dwindling cash reserves and growing numbers of unpaid assessments, management company executives say.....

Quote:  Homeowners associations strapped by unpaid assessments and rising foreclosures are turning to volunteer work crews and cutting maintenance jobs to avoid increasing fees.....

p.s.  the definition of VOLUNTEER is:  to perform, or offer to perform, work of your own free will; to do charitable or helpful work without receiving pay for it.

Yes, I agree with the definition. Volunteering for Churches, Senior/Youth orgainization and Worthy causes are great, but, to help HOA in tough times - No way Jose.

With all due respect, I do not understand your comment “help HOA in tough times”; you have to realize that the HOA is all of us, right? Each and every homeowner in the community makes up the HOA, i.e. your fellow neighbor. We, as a HOA, then hire a management company, in our case PDS, to manage our funds, assist us with legal matters, manage our contractors (landscape, water, pest control, tot lots, etc), pay our bills, handle correspondence, etc.

Okay, back to the original intent of this posting…..which is about cleaning up the community where we can with little effort. Sure, we could ask the management company on the HOAs behalf to hire someone to clean up these yards, but we are looking at approx $200 per yard. Who do you think pays this in the end? Yup, that would be each and every homeowner in the community. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to see my dues go up because we had to spend thousands of dollars to weed some yards for not only aesthetics but to avoid any fire hazards they may pose as the temperatures sore into the summer.

If you look down your street and you happen to have one of these foreclosed properties with overgrown weeds on it, you might want to think about the affect it has on you every time you see it; would it be worth a couple of hours of your time to fix what is a constant irritant?

KUDOS!!!! If I could,  I would help in a heart beat. I would be more than willing to donate some stuff to help though. Weed killer, etc.

I am sick and tired of staring at tumbleweed filled eyesore properties. I am sick and tired of worrying about what is living in the weeds as I walk passed the property, I am tired of worrying about what is going to happen if someone flicks a cigarette butt onto the property and the weeds catch fire.

In a perfect world, the HOA would hire people to do this however, we are more than aware that this isn't an option so this is a great opprotunity to do something about it, I am just sorry that I can't be of more assistance. Again, let me know if I can donate some stuff!

I don't think it's the HOA's responsibility to clean individual yards, I think it's the responsibility of the home owner (whether or not they do it is irrellevent).  We have a vacant house next door.  I weed my yard, I weed my side of their yard.  My neighbor on the otherside does her yard and the other side of that yard.  It's just easier to spend an extra 10 minutes then it is to spend hours complaining about it.  Another neighbor calls realtors on signs that are posted and complains until they get someone out to clean up other vacant homes/yards in our area.

I think this clean up/BBQ is a great idea.  No one is talking about cleaning up the common areas - that the HOA IS paid to maintain.  The idea, as I understand it, is to clean up the homes that have been vacated...

So we can all sit back and continue to complain (or be thankful we're not on the block as the homes that need to be cleaned) or we can get out there and help to do something about it....

The house next to mine was foreclosed a few months ago. I'm out there just about every weekend picking weeds. I can't stand looking at them.

I doubt your foreclosed neighbor's weeds will ever get touched, regardless of who's responsibility it is. I suggest getting out there and cleaning them up.

Reminder that our event is this Satuday. Thanks to all who have volunteered! If you would like to participate, please report to the Main Park at 7:45a. We plan to set up 5 crews who will be assigned at least 2 houses for clean-up.

We also hope to see everyone out for the Community BBQ. We have rec'd enough sponsorship that we will be able to provide hamburgers, hotdogs, buns, condiments, chips, and yes, even water. :-) If you would like to assist at this event, please meet us at the Main Park at 3:45p; we will also need assistance with clean-up. WE RECOMMEND BRINGING PICNIC BLANKETS or CHAIRS.

See you there!

When the house next door to me was forclosed upon. My husband and I took to pulling weeds, trimming trees, etc. in order to keep the neighborhood looking nice. It takes a few extra minutes-sure, but you don't have to live next to an eyesore. Is that our responsibility? No, but I don't want to live in a neighborhood full of weeds. I just wish more people would take some extra time out of their schedules to do it. I wish I could be there tomorrow, but I work on Saturdays. I hope that it goes well!!!

Very true Meghan if we all took a little extra time our neighborhood might not look as bad as they do. I know it is not there responabilty but take pride in your neighborhood.
