04/07/2008 6:05 PM Alert

My dog and my parents small dog might not have any hope to live. They both ate a sago palm together and are now in the vet clinic being carefully watched. This is a house plant my parents bought with no warning that it is poisonous to animals.

The Sago Palm is one of the most dangerous plants that animals can get into. All parts of the plant are toxic, although the seeds are the worst. Following ingestion of a Sago Palm, a pet may develop signs of illness within 1-2 days.

Affected animals will develop liver failure, bleeding disorders, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Sadly, most animals that ingest the Sago Palm will not survive.

Our dogs started showing signs illness just 1 hour after eating. Including vomiting white foam, shaking, loss of appitite, diarrhea, and could get seizures.

Bye Bye Maricopa!

Thanks for the warning Lexmark. We have four dogs. I put in a Koi pond this weekend and was looking at these trees for decoration around the pond. I came really close to buying a small one. For those who don't know what they are, here's a pic:

Bets of luck to the dogs.

lexmark, sorry to hear about your dogs. I had absolutely no idea about sago palms being poisonous. Looks like I have some REPLANTING to do in my backyard.

Edited at the request of the sales person who sold me the Sago Palms for Arizona Unique Landscapes. Like I've said in previous posts, "we love our landscaping". But the person in question was correct that all involved were responsible for not knowing these plants are poisonous. This includes AUL, the salesperson involved, the arborist, and myself. So I apologize to bstoneaz for tossing him under the bus and causing "drama" for him.

I hope your dogs get better lexmark.

While researching for a customer...I came across this site...

www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?/pagename=pro_apcc_toxic-plants

If your pets frequent your backyard then you may want to visit this site..it lists COMMON plants that may be in your yard that are toxic to your pets...ranging from indigestion to fatality...

Aloe, Asparagus Fern, Lily, Oleander, Bird of Paradise, Sago Palms, Chinese Evergreen Elm, Yucca's, and many others...

This might help as well....I hope your pets get better....

Today the dogs were released from the vet and after taking a long nap, there both barking at people. Also eating as usual too. Were not supposed to get are hopes high because it can take a few months for everything to turn around again. But I think they will both be 2 of the few to survive eating these stupid house plants!
