Do they belong?  Should the Community of Hope Chrch be involved with Easter egg hunts?  Should the parishoners bring candy for baskets to the church?  In my opinion, no. I am not a Jehovah's Witness, and, in the eyes of many 'Christians' I'm not a good example of the faith, yet............

I do not recall any entries in the Bible expunding the merits of celebrating pagan rites.

It's a valid question, what do y'all think? And please, try to use some sort of 'maturity' in answering.

Throughout much of our daily lives I suspect we do many things that are derived from pagans. The question is do we do it in order to celebrate being pagan, or because it is simply something to have fun and enjoy?

Easter should be celebrated by remembering Christ. We should be thinking of Him and remembering the sacrifice that was made for us by Him. Does this mean we shouldn't have good, wholesome, family activites in conjunction with that? I suspect much of what happens at the Easter Celebrations will also include discussion or a program on the sacrifices of Christ. EVEN if this doesn't happen, it is nice that churches provide a time and an activity for families to come together and enjoy some good fun! There are never enough excuses to do that!

You've got to look past it being derived from pagan celebration/activities, and remember the good it can provide for the families and the community!

Easter is about Christ and the sacrifice he made for us.  And also for the eggs that he colored and hid for us to find.

Love@hm is right. Once you start trying to purge everything with pagan roots from our lives, where does it stop?

Case in point: you will have to find new days of the week. Good luck getting everyone else to sign on to this . . .

Sunday: day of the sun
Monday: moon day
Tuesday: day of Tiew, Norse god of war
Wednesday: day of Wodin, head Norse god (that's why Wednesday is spelled that way!)
Thursday: day of Thor, Norse god of thunder
Friday: day of Friga, Norse goddess of love
Saturday: day of Saturn (got to throw in a Roman god somehow)

English is a Germanic language, hence our preponderance for Norse mythology, but his is similar in Romance (Latin based) languages. For example, German retains Sonntag (sun-day), Montag (moon-day), Dienstag (day of Tiew), Donnerstag (thunder-day), Freitag (Friga's day). Spanish retains Lunes (moon-day), Martes (day of Mars, Roman god of war), Viernes (associated with Venus, Roman goddess of love). Same gods, different cultures, same focus (love and war).

As for months, January is named after Janus, the two-faced god (the month looks back at the old year and forward to the new) . . . and so on.

Easter, Christmas, Halloween, etc. are fun holidays with pagan roots, but we aren't celebrating the pagan stuff, it's just there, like with our days and months. We aren't venerating Wodin or Saturn or Janus by accepting those names, are we?

Now, not focusing on the atonement, Christ's life, mission, resurrection, etc. and just focusing on Peeps (ugh!) and plastic grass is a different story. That's up to families and individuals, though.

The words we use for the days of the week or months of the year, regardless of what the origin of the actual word is, isn't something that we are choosing to or not to celebrate and isn't something that any of us confuse with any kind of spiritual celebration. Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny can be confusing for children. It is easy for kids, and understandably so, to make that icon the focus of the holiday and not the true meaning of what we as Christians are celebrating. This only matters of course if the true meaning is something that is important to you.
I have heard people argue that even thought they tell their children that there is a Santa and easter bunny that they still know the true meaning of Christmas and Easter. But my argument is; shouldn't the excitement at Christmas be that Jesus was born?! We all know that the only thing on the minds of kids when they are lying in bed on Christmas eve and wake up Christmas morning is santa and the gifts he brought. It ISN'T where it should be. The REAL gift. Yes, they may know if you ask them "what is the true meaning of Christmas Joey?" he'll say "It is Jesus' birthday". But the excitement and joy and happiness is misplaced. The focus to those kids is not on Jesus, it's on Santa.

Oops, I never answered the original posters questions.

If you havn't guessed, my answer is NO WAY on the candy baskets and egg hunt! I went to a Catholic Church when I was younger and at Christmas service they would have someone dressed as Santa come trotting down the isle with candy canes for all the kids and at Easter the Easter Bunny would show up with chocolates. That is absolutely horrible to me! That does not, by any stretch of the imagination, belong in Church! I would have to say the same with the egg hunt and easter baskets. Children are easily distracted. For them, the focus of that day will end up being the candy and searching for eggs and not what it is supposed to be.

I see that I didn't give an answer to my question.

I don't believe the secular celebrations of pagan holidays belong in any church that I may choose to attend. Santa Claus for Christmas, nope. The Easter Bunny, huntting for Easter Eggs, nope. I would rather my church teach me about God's grace and the grace of his son. Churches should have "family friendly" events, yet, I don't feel those events should be connected to the teahings of the Bible, especially when they are blatantly opposite to those teachings. Yes, 'giving' as a value is taught, but, the teachings are from man-made, fictional characters. These things are great in the secular world, therefore, they have a place. Pagan rites, rituals, and celebrations are a part of daily life, I don't feel we can eliminate them from our life. I'll just say that we ought to think about what is being taught in our churches befoiore we simply fall in with the flock.

I like it when they mix the Easter Bunny with 'jesus'.  It just goes to show that jesus is about as real as the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus.

This is something I can agree with.  my own church (LDS, incase you didn't know) has activities related to Christmas (not usually Easter - but sometimes ) where we get together and enjoy the fun of a meal.  Santa might visit, and there is usually a program about Christ - however not always - depends on the congregation.  We call these Ward Parties. . . because really that is what they are

'WARD' is what we call our congregations.

HOWEVER - none of this is our worship time.  On Easter Sunday and Sunday's surrounding Christmas, we spend our times learning of Christ and discussing and celebrating His life.

We have been told time and time again to spend less time and money on the holidays and more time centering our lives around Christ.  BUT, we also do not generally go to the opposite end of none of the commercialism.  I DO Applaud those that do!

My own sister chooses to open Christmas gifts on Christmas Eve instead, and then her family goes out on Christmas Day and serves the community in some way.  My mother, who always throws an Easter party, now has her party on a Saturday instead of following Church because she didn't feel right having the egg hunt on Easter - well, in reality - it was that she didn't feel good doing it on Sunday - and I agree with her.

In my own home we read the specific scriptures dealing with Christ's life around those holidays, and we discuss regularly the importance of Christ.  We do this daily as well  I expect as my children get older they will take with them a love of the Savior - or at least I hope they do.  I do not expect them to fully grasp what that means for their lives at 5 and 8, but hopefully by the time they are young adults they will realize and come to understand the implications through all the lessons we have on Christ.

Christmas and Easter are really just days on the calendar.  If we are doing things correctly we celebrate Christ's life EVERYDAY.  I suppose this is why I don't mind my kids opening gifts or eating candy on holidays.

If the Community of Hope Church wants to reach out to the community by hosting an egg hunt, I do not think God would mind. God wants us to treat everyone fairly, honor our families, and worship. If by having an egg hunt that is opened up to more people then the better.

How do you determine what it is that He would and wouldn't mind? Because a casino night would bring in even more people than an egg hunt!

With all due respect...with all the evil in the world, I doubt He is seriously distraught about a few brightly painted eggs and chocolate rabbit ears.

Again, how do you determine what He does and doesn't find acceptable?

Now I'm not saying whether God thinks it's right or wrong for a church to have an egg hunt because unless He tells me Himself I would only be guessing.  You make your choices in life whether to participate or not participate in something like that and hopefully you'll find out later if your choice was the right one.  I'm just not so sure I would make a presumption about God not minding if the focus on the death and resurection of His son Jesus is in direct competition with candy and eggs to all the little children who He loves so much.

Some occasions should be celebrated, yes resurrection of Christ. God is good, and its good to celebrate him. Even God himself ordered Israelite's to celebrate a special holiday. Its a good time to remember Jesus and whats hes done for us. Doing family events like Easter hunts and trunk or treat are fun activities for the kids and a good way to teach them the true meaning! Most children think its a fun holiday, christain children view them as "remember Jesus"
Read Second Chronicles 35 tells how easter reminds us of Jesus

I don't attend this church, so it's not a defense of them, per se. I think in a world where people don't spend nearly as much quality time with family as they used to, planning an event for the church where families attend and are encouraged to participate is positive. If you don't believe in it, or don't think that Easter Bunny is good or positive, don't go. If you don't want Easter Bunny at your house, don't have it. For all the bad in the world, it's hard to understand knocking the Easter Bunny. Even when I was a kid we had Easter cartoons and shows on TV... with Easter Bunny! I'm Catholic, and we observe Lent fully. I think I may partake in the chocolate, etc.

Yes, that's really my name

I'm curious...do you put up a tree for Christmas?

"I'm curious...do you put up a tree for Christmas?"

Yes, and no.  Some years I do, others, I don't.  I suppose I try to look at my heart and make things right for me.  The tree is pretty, yet it doesn't mean 'Christmas' to me.  Giving to others is nice, it is the right thing to do, yet it seems to become obsessive with some during the Christmas season. Receiving gifts is great, again the obsessiveness of this during Christamas bothers me.  So, I'll say that I celebrate Christmas in line with my faith.  I work to do the 'right' things in acordance with my faith in Jesus Christ.  Am I the "perfect Christian"?  By many people's standards, my consumption of beer and blues music would deffinitely not even categorize me as a "good Christian".  Fortunately , the judgements of 'man' are meaningless in my faith in God.

I personally don't care what the Community of Hope Church celebrates.  My aim was to provoke thought and conversation. After all, this is a forum for communication,, i.e., provoking thought and conversation.

What would God have you do?  Have faith in him.

Easter eggs, Easter bunnies, and Christmas trees considered, he would have us to believe in his grace, he would have us believe in Jesus Christ.

Your mileage may vary...so be it.   This is after-all, a free country where spiritual beliefs are concerned.

Better not put up a Christmas tree this year either if that is the train of thought. I personally have found nothing wrong with Pagan traditions. Can someone explain to me what is wrong with Pagan belief's? No, I don't adhere to them but they are spoken of like they are evil and that is just not the case.

I think it is up to the parents (yes I have two little kids) to teach them the true meaning of Easter and Christmas. I am very active in my church and teach my kids the values and beliefs that we practice. That being said, kids are kids and they should be able to celebrate both the commercialized and the true meaning of holidays. I put up a Christmas tree and found no greater joy of seeing my three year old's face shine on Christmas morning when she saw what Santa brought, but after the excitement of the gifts, we as a family sat down and had quiet time and talked about the birth of Jesus. I plan to do the same at Easter.........take time to teach your kids the true meaning of the holiday instead of bashing others for having fun.

Well, since my 'children are 28 and 32, I have already taken the time to school them, and I haven't "bashed" anyone. I would suggest that people shouldn't make uneducated assumptions.  I simply asked a question, stated my opinion, there was no bashing of any person or faith. Do what you like, I would suggest that you only think about what you are doing.  Thank God this is a free country and we can speak our opinions, never mind the small minds who would like to make something out of nothing!
