I'm afraid that once I move that a big, fat rattlesnake will bite me on the derriere while I'm dodging golf ball sized flies and swatting mosquitoes. Don’t get me wrong I appreciate all the alerts, but I’m a big, fat chicken when it comes to dealing with yucky creatures. I’m beginning to think I’ll need to purchase some medieval combat armour.

Sounds worse than it is! I've been in MM for 2 yrs and have yet to see a snake, have only found 1 dead scorpion, and the mosquitoes seem much better this year than last. Last summer I spent every evening smashing mosquitoes in my house, this year only a couple so far. You'll be fine! : )

jstein, thanks, you made me feel a wee bit better.

K2, snakes with poisonous fangs capable of inflicting death don't need to carry a machete; not yet anyway (laughs).

Jgk, I feel what you're saying. But what's up with the machete theme? Can you please clue me in? I haven't heard that one.

Thanks...

Serp not to freak you out even more but last month or so ago there was a fight between some kids and they had machetti's right here in MM.... I dont know the entire story maybe someone can elaborate. BUT I can tell you that as soon as I heard this I made my husband get an ADT alarm system installed and I would like to find a guard dog as well. Is it over the top? Probably, but it will help my piece of mind

Jgk, thanks for taking the time to respond.

No, it's not over the top, and I don't blame you one bit for taking measures that increased your sense of well being.

I'm not even living there yet and I had a very elaborate ADT system installed. Well, to be honest my insurance company did kind of help with that decision. I've a vacate house policy and they kind of insisted.

There was a fight among teens last month and someone was stabbed...not sure if they survived or not. Happens everywhere though, no place is completely crime free.

Jgk2383, I am sorry but you are paranoid. I too live in MM and I have never seen a rattlesnake or any sort of harmful creature. Yes there are some questionable folkes in the neighborhood but what do expect with such low housing costs? The machette thing is absolutely ridiuclous. It was guys fighting over a girl, big deal. Its not like they broke into someones home and attaked a family. It was people that knew eachother and had a problem. You are acting like its random acts of violence.

BTW, your ADT system is going to do what for you? It just gives you a false sense of security. You really want to feel secure? Get a gun.

Maybe I am paranoid, but it's better safe than sorry in my book. I myself have never come across any sort of harmful creature but just hearing about it causes concern especially if you have children and or pets in the home. The Machette thing is not ridiculous... and I dont care if the fight was over a piece of bubble gum, those morons hacked at each other with a machette that isn't normal. My ADT system will at least alert to an intruder and it does give me a sense of security knowing that it goes directly to the police when the alarm goes off. So Am I paranoid? Probably but at least I feel safer in a state/town that I am completely new to.

Of course, it's beneficial to have an alarm system if one can afford it.

JgK, do you have a lock on your circuit breaker box outside? You might want to do that if you haven't already don't so.

Sorry, I still think thats just irrational paranoia. You might as well go live in a bunker in the middle of the desert then.

Yeah, my husband works for a security company. His motto is that he installs a false sense of security for people. Believe me, if someone wanted to hack you up, first of all they probably wouldnt care that the police were on their way and two they would have plenty of time to do it before the police arrived

JonAndAshly,

I'm finding myself more than slightly amused at the vigor in which you've chosen to challenge certain remarks.

Your husband's motto is a little disconcerting, but probably not for the reason you think. While I would agree that an alarm system isn't a physical obstacle to a burglar, it’s been shown to be a psychological weapon; it's a deterrent to the opportunistic thief. Why would a burglar rob my potentially noisy house when he has yours to rob? Statistics back this up. A home without an alarm system is three times more likely to be burglarized. And I'll bet my alarm system will alert me faster than your vigilance will you. I'll have my gun ready before you'll have yours.

As I stated previously, the installation of my system was a requirement for my home to be insured, and if you have an alarm system your insurance premiums will see a reduction of twenty percent. This is because properly maintained systems are seen as an effective line of defense.

"Sorry, I still think thats just irrational paranoia. You might as well go live in a bunker in the middle of the desert then."

I don’t know if it was your intent, but your above remark was rude. In my opinion, the only thing that borders on being irrational in this discourse was your gall to attack prudence.
