A friend of mine moved out here about a year ago. Ever since he has been out here he's been using the Fry's gas cause it's less crowded and right by his house. He has gone through 2 fuel pumps in that time frame.

The last shop that worked on his car came out and said, "Do you get your gas at a grocery store?"..   thinking this guy was joking or something, he said yeah...

The mechanic told him some stories that kind of scared him.  Like valve deposits, fuel pumps, bad gas mileage.  He called Chevrolet and asked them about the fuel. They said to use only top tier station to prolong the life of his car.

He has done some research on the fuel - and found some amazing stuff.  The "bottom of the barrel" stuff that grocery stores bid for..  Stuff that goes though diesel pipes, then cleaned and first x amount of gallon is "dirty gas" and that is sold to grocery stores.

He event went as far as contacting Mythbusters on the Discovery channel.  They loved the idea of testing the fuel, but felt it might be a touch subject and said they wouldn't consider doing a show on that.

Have any of you had problems due to poor gas at "cheaper places"?

I know back in like 2000 I had new truck with 5.7 and my friend had a 5.1. He would beat me in a race.. until he used cheap gas. When he went back to Mobile.. he'd beat me.. so I know performance and MPG is hampered..

thats funny.

back when i worked at a gas station during college i happened to talk to the guy that filled the trucks for all the different fuel companies. i mentioned that my truck ran better on mobile fuel than shell. he then said "the only difference between the 2 is the name on the sign, i turn the same valve from the same tank to fill both their delivery trucks"

I've been buying gas there since it opened.  And I've had no issues with my performance.  95% of all my fill up's come from them.  I've seen the tankers come in more than once and it's Flying J's gas which I know is not the bottom of the barrel gas.

This statement is absolutly true. A few years back I read an article about where stations get fuel from and what cleaners they use, not to mention the myths about octane ratings. The end result was that they are pretty much all the same. They also share many of the same distribution sources. You can pay more, you can pay less, but you are still getting the same thing.

My source reading for this was Consumer Reports.

Gas isn't quite gas. Some brands have different additives, such as the Top Tier that was mentioned above. It's now a diagnostic requirement for GM technicians that customers use Top Tier gas if they have any fuel related problems. So in a sense, yes Mobil might be the same underlying gas as Shell, but it is not the detergent package as Shell, Chevron or QT.

I have tried this on several different cars. I ran several tanks of Costco gas, driving the cars gently and slowly and then several tanks of QT, driving harder and faster. The QT gas consistently turned in higher MPG, smoother idle and acceleration. QT is also consistently within 2-5 cents a gallon as Costco, so why not?

years ago, i got a tank of gas in my gmc 350 v8 from arco. mpg went way down, it blew crap out the tail pipe, ran really rough. next tank was from a 76 station (got same octane). ran wonderful, back to normal.

i don't know what it is, but i think there is a difference somehow. i prefer to get gas at busier stations, because i know that the gas isn't sitting in those tanks too long.

If you can't spot the loser, it might be you

I had that "same" problem with our '01 Suburban. We started getting gas at Fry's right after it opened and within 2 weeks the chugging began! We thought maybe the gas was watered down, and after a couple months stopped using them completely.

A few months later, after continuing to have problems, we had to replace the fuel pump. I will never compromise and go back to a grocer's gas station!

A friend of ours runs a TA truck stop and we know for sure that there are "bad places" and "good places" to get gas, and that you should NEVER fill up when the gas truck is delivering (it stirs up all the crap in the tank and will transfer into your tank).

This one time, I went to Circle K, and I ended up with bad gas. I'll never eat a burrito from there again!

Again, it's D-E-N-N-A. But I have to disagree. That would be an insult to his intelligence.

Never had bad gas from Fry's and have been fueling from there since they opened their doors! BTW they fuel from Flying J and I always get gas from their stops when traveling on long road trips! I have heard that if you see the fuel truck filling the tanks at the station you should not buy the fuel for a few hours after due to the fact that it stirs up the settlement at the bottom of the large fuel tanks and you could pump that stuff into your vehicle and cause damage. Don't know if it is fact or myth. Good one for Myth Busters!!!!
