My niece lives in Mesa and they are tearing down their AZ Room..she said the problem with it is either it's too cold or too hot...unless you are planning on running your hvac to it I would reconsider...

does your niece truly understand what an arizona room is? its not an addition to your home where u are making an additional bedroom. its an semi outdoor area, screen in to protect from insects, weather etc etc. its first uses where as sleeping areas during the summer months where they could catch the nighttime breezes&be shielded from mosquitoes etc. thats what i want it for, i want to make my patio even more usable plus it will keep it clean from debris carried by the wind&of course no bothersome mosquitos.

Well maybe I'm the one that is wrong not my niece.....hers has windows with slats (the ones that crank out like shutters) and screens....most likely why it gets so warm...back east we would call it an enclosed porch..

I didn't realize your AZ room will just have screens....

Disregard my earlier post!

Enclosing the patio is a great idea, into an Arizona room. We are entertaining this idea as well and do not want the expensive costs of adding duct work to the original house. I was thinking of a misting/ swamp coolomg system, which any D.Y.I. can do themselves. The patio faces towards the afternoon heat. There are several materials to choose from and each have different pricing to go with. Let us know of your decision and what the material is.

What's an Arizona Room?

I'm from Florida and there we have screened porches and Florida Rooms.  The difference is that screened porches are pations that are screened in and florida rooms have windows that can be opened all around (usually 3 walls) and it can be heated and/or air conditioned    I haven't seen any screened in ptaios here in Arizona.  Our patio faces West and it is unusable in the afternoon because of the sun.  Am open to any suggestions and maybe an "Arizona Room" is what we need.   Let me know.  Thanks!

I grew up in AZ with a screened in porch and made sure that my last two houses had a one as well. I reallly like them, especially during the bug season.

Two suggestions, make sure to leave a few openings at the bottom where the water can run out if you hose off the patio. The second if you are going to have a small wall, instead of floor to ceiling screens, sit down in whatever furniture you will be using first to determine how high you want your wall. My friend built an Arizona room, then bought a low seating arrangement and could not see over the wall very easily.

You can even build it anticipating adding glass to the screened areas later, whether you put the windows in or not. Provides more options down the road.
