EDITED:  The information below, seems to be in agreement with Pinal County.  My esitmate of ballots cast was slightly off, so the percentages are off a bit.  However, Griffin does appear to have won a seat on the council.

Here's how I see it:

Smith 1017 82.48%
Godsey 216 17.52%
Total 1233

Griffin 729 59.12%
Brown 508 41.20%
Dunn 477 38.69%
Deidrich 449 36.42%
Haddad 391 31.71%
Hermanson 349 28.30%
Lewis 324 26.28%
Lopez 303 24.57%
Estimated Total 1233

In order to estimate the total voters for council, I used the total voters for Mayor.  If I'm close, Griffin is the only one who made it tonight.  Brown, Dunn, Deidrich, and Haddad will fight it out in May.

Good to see a bit of new blood in the mix. It would have been nice if the Maricopa voters would have at least voted a person into a city council position that sends their kids to Maricopa schools. I think we need new people but we need people that at least feel that Maricopa is their town as a whole, not just parts of it. It is hard to imagine a city council person who thinks Maricopa is great for groceries and friends but not good enough for her kids, is going to be committed to doing what is best for the city. I send my kids out of town everyday to school, hoping everyday that someone will care enough to help us citizens make the changes in the district that are needed so we can send our kids here. Granted the Phoenix High School District is not the greatest but it is better than here right now.

No body made it.  Mariquisha was the closest but only at 20.54% or 726 votes.

Looks like it's gonna be a long couple of months.

resofcopa...little late to be throwing shots isn't it?  why is it ok for you to send your kid of out of town and not a council candidate.  why should her kid be a guinea pig and yours not?  why can't you be the change agent for schools?  i just find your logic slightly flawed.  They might have valid reasons for having their kids in the valley.  until the school people get past their arrogance and ignorance, this district will never get better.

Marquisha was the only candidate to get over the 50%. Making her the only not to have to go to a run off. She is elected! The numbers on Pinal County Election are "Total Votes Cast". The percentages are based on "Cast Ballots".

Smokinggun, great point. For some reason many are blind to the education problems in this district. If not for the talented teachers here this ship would be sinking. Changes need to be made on the board and then within the administration to right that ship.

Wrong there.  Here is the code.

"

Any candidate who shall receive at the primary election a majority of all the votes cast shall be

declared to be elected to the office for which he is a candidate effective as of the date of the

general election, and no further election shall be held as to said candidate; provided that if more

candidates receive a majority than there are offices to be filled then those equal in number to

the offices to be filled receiving the highest number of votes shall be declared elected."

At this point the top 6 are headed to the Runoff.

It appears to me that the primaries are disigned more to eliminate candidates for the general than to have a winner. That is what primaries are for in other elections(ie presidential) so it makes sense to me.

While I agree that education is a problem in Maricopa, let us please realize that the city council has no jurisdiction over the school system. If you are interested in changing the schools, please run for school board!!!! While I am not a supporter of Griffin, and was not one who voted for her, my issues with her are based on her misguided sense that she is somehow going to fix problems on 347 - a road that is out of the city's jurisdiction - and is making statements on all of the things "she" is going to do when in fact, as ONE council member out of 7, she alone has little power and again, all of the issues she "says" she is going to fix, are for the most part, not in the city jurisdiction. My other BIG issue with her is the fact that she works for the city of Mesa in what I believe is a HUGE conflict of interest. Everyone seems so concerned with conflicts of current council members but at least they have a vested interest in Maricopa!!!! Griffin has NO vested interest here other than trying to make a name for her public career as is evidenced by her working for another city. If she really wanted to help Maricopa, why has she never been hired here by our city? There have been over the past few years several good positions within the city. But she instead works for Mesa and expects us to believe that she will work in the interests of Maricopa as a council member. I would ask this question. What happens if Mesa has a city council meeting on a night when we do at some point (one city calls for a special session which routinely happens)? It is part of her job in Mesa to be there and it is her responsibility as a council member. Which one would she go to? The one where her job is on the line and she makes her "salary" or the city of Maricopa where she was elected (IF she is elected)??? While every council member occasionally misses meetings, I see this as a conflict in her priorities to which city she will serve with more dedication. I want to know that my council members are fully devoted to the city they are elected to!!!!!!

I was told by pinal county that it was 51% of voters, not total votes. If it's total votes, which means voters times max of 3, it's virtually impossible for a candidate to get 51%.

Sorry if the information received by the county was wrong.

That may be valid for county elections.  City elections are covered by the City code, a county employee may not be up to speed with our requirements.

The only real way then to win in a primary with that many candidates, is to have all your constituants vote for only one person, you! That reduces the number of cast votes, increasing your percentages. Wow, that's a weird system. It seems it should be based on cast ballots.

globalgirl - What you are requesting of Ms. Griffin is that she quit her job. Why not ask the same of all of the council members and mayor. Very few, if any candidates works exclusively in Maricopa. Even the council members who have land holdings here in town, have them elsewhere too. What you area asking for is only for people who do not need to work (either independently wealthy, wealthy through real estate or development sales, retired). Council study sessions start at 6:00pm, and Ms. Griffin has not indicated it would be a problem. As most City Halls close at 5:00 pm, she could make it to meetings in most, if not all cases.

I do not think working for another city holds the same level of conflict as someone who has land holdings here, or even someone who is employed by a company that works with developers, developing the land. What decisions could she make in Maricopa that impact her position in Mesa. Visa versa, what decision could she influence in Mesa that would impact Maricopa. I don't know, but perhaps you could shed light on that. I do know that there have been decisions made in Maricopa that financially benefitted themselves.

But even then (if all your constituants only voted for you) it would be hard. If Griffin's 726 voters only voter for her, that would leave over 2,000 cast votes and she still would not have gotten 51%. There was very little chance for any of the candidates to get 51% of votes cast.

Yes, we all know it was a primary. It just seems like if Griffin got 51% of voters to vote for her (which she did) she'd be in at the primary. That would make sense to me.

However, that's not what the code says, so it's on to the general.
