03/17/2008 8:09 AM Alert

Let me first start by saying like most Tortosa residents, I have complained about our fees, the lack of facilities, the over grown weeds, etc.

I also believe that the egg hunt could of been done in a more organized way, but let's strike that up as a learning experience.  I do know that they were looking for community involvement in setting up the event, but received no interest.  I must say that the movie night at the park was a lot better than the egg hunt.

At the end of the day, this is OUR community.  So what are WE going to do about it?  Would you be interested in joining a planning committee where we are more in charge of our community and events?  There was a sign up sheet at the egg hunt, but unfortunately I was the only person who registered

The Tower:
I talked to the HOA ladies on Saturday and received some good information.  The builder is suppose to start the landscaping on the tower some time this week.  Let's hope this is true.  It will definitely make the entrance to our community look more inviting.

Overgrown weeds
For occupied homes:  One of the committees they are looking for members will involve "policing" the neighborhoods.  Reporting homes that are in violation and having fines issued.  They are also looking for people who will be involved with approving requests and other tasks. This is a good way to be a voice with the HOA.

For vacant homes:  Ultimately, it is the BUILDERS responsibility to maintain the appearance of these homes.  As sad as it is, I'm sure the builders can care less what these homes look like, because they don't live near them.  What is the solution?

Question:  Would you be interested in having a community involvement day where we would get together and "volunteer" to clean the front yards of these vacant homes to make our neighborhoods more appealing?  If so, I'd be happy to work closely with you and the HOA ladies in organizing such and event.  This will help foster pride in our neighborhood and is also a good way to get to know your neighbors.

I truly believe if we (myself included) redirect the energy in takes to complain into doing something about it, it will make a positive impact to our community.

If you are interested in doing any of the above, shoot me a PM and we can work together.

I would love to help out if I felt like we were paying these ladies to do anything but it seems to me like they sit around alot and we are paying them to do that. Why are they not out looking at the yards and helping out with the other problems???

If I'm gonna drive around looking and reporting infractions, can I bill the hoa ladies for my time doing their job? Isn't that their job?

When the ladies in the trailor pay me $85 a month and help me with my job I will help them with "there's"!! If us as a community are going to do this work, what are we paying $85 a month for? CT I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I work all day and commute two hours a day. I don't have the time or energy to clean up other people's yards, especially when we have a large surplus of money that is being wasted on two salaries of these women in that darn trailor that have more excuses then solutions for every problem brought up to them!!!! My blood boils with those smug women who laugh all the way to the bank cashing there paychecks for sitting in a high rent trailor in a/c all day while we as a community try and figure out how to get our neighbors to pull there weeds!! I keep my house nice, and I just turn a blind eye to all the weeds and brown grass and so on and so on!!! It has been fruitless in our endeavor to oust this HOA company and I have way too many other things to worry about. Hopefully one day all there mistreatment of us and our community will bite them in the butt!!!!

Slam...I understand your frustration...believe me I do.  I want to make sure you don't confuse what I was saying.  "We" would not be providing services for the occupied homes.  Although, they are looking for committee members to report and fine occupied homes that are in violation.  Participating in a committe like this is a good way to have your voice heard.  The major problem is the vacant homes, which is the builders responsibility to maintain since they still "own" the property.  My suggestion was only to have a community pride involvement day where we focused on these homes, since we are the ones who have to live with them.

I too work FT and have quite the commute to Chandler every day -- I feel your pain.  But I came to the conclusion that i should turn my energy from complaining to trying to do something about it.  I'm not sure which neighborhood you live in.  We live in Calabria (Homelife) and there are quite a few families who plan to "beautify" our neighborhood.  I was just throwing the suggestion out there to see if anyone else would be interested.

P.S.  See you're a Seahawks Fan...Sorry about the SB loss

It's a Philadelphia Eagles fan, the only team that matters in PA!!! But, back to the topic at hand. I understand the builders are responsible for the homes that have not sold but  who is responsible for the foreclosures? Which I have two of those surronding just my house with weeds up to my waist, is it now the banks who own the house responsibilty to weed? I think $85 a month from all of us in Tortosa can cover "our"HOA paying to have somebody come in and clean it up!! It costs money to weed your yard, why should we pay to weed a vacant houses yard? CT nothing has worked, we had our minute with that smarmy woman from the trailor when we had the meeting in the park and she has no power, we were barking up the wrong tree. Maybe at one point probably when they try to raise or HOA fee another 20% in a few months we will have enough angry people to put something together to boot these do-nothings out of here!!!!

Ohhh...excuse me....the Eagles!!!  The Susan Lucci of  the Super  Bowl.  LOL  How silly of me.  Don't you mean the only team in PA that matters...when it comes to Super Bowl losses?

That's a great question about foreclosed homes.  You know, there is actually a meeting tomorrow night @ 5:30, at the HOA trailor.  You should come and ask these questions.  I'm curious to see how they answer.  I'm also curious to see why it isn't possible to have some of our monthly fee money go towards someone cleaning the front yards of such properties.

So, I'll see you there tomorrow possibly?   If not, I don't mind asking the questions for you and will report back the finidngs.

CT-thanks for your willingness to help clean up our neighborhood. I live in your neck of the woods and I too am sick and tired of how crappy our neighborhood looks!  However, Slam66 has very valid points. Why are we paying dues, exorbitant dues at that, only to have to do the work ourselves?  What are we really accomplishing, long term, in not forcing our HOA to do their jobs and us doing their jobs for them?

Additionally, I take issue with the fact that this HOA meeting that is being held tonight (unbenkownst to me) is scheduled for 5:30pm. I, like MANY/MOST residents commute to and from work. I cannot get home in time for ANY meeting set at 5:30pm. Where was all of the advertising for this meeting? Why isn't it being held at a more user friendly time?  If this is a meeting to address community issues, I am part of the community and would very much like to attend. Having to be told things second hand , or haivng to read about what happened at the meeting on 85239 is not what I would consider a professional way to disseminate information. Sometimes I think that comunity participation on the issues that really matter is not welcomed? But, I sure did get tons of advertising (yet another waste of our HOA monies) for the easter egg hunt? WTH?

Moon-The meeting is actually scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5:30 and I believe it's a "committee meeting", which includes the people who signed up for a committee.   My understanding is that they have received a number of community committee members.

I'm sure it's an open forum and you're more than welcomed to attend if you can arrange to be in the area.

Thanks for the clarification in regard to the meeting tomorrow. I guess my rant was unwarranted since I did not volunteer to be on a committee! Oops!

I know that it sounds like a cop-out, but, I really do not have any extra time or energy to give to a committe. For the forseeable future, I will stay focused on taking care of my own yard!

THANKS to those who are donating their time to the volunteer committees in hopes of making our neighborhoods a better place for all of us!  Those of us with two jobs and a 100 mile roundtrip commute each day appreciate you!

i also appreciate your ideas CT..and actually was talking to my wife the other day about going out each weekend and cleaning up a few lots at a time...but then i also have to agree with other comments about these ladies need to get out there and do what they are getting paid for....i too make a 120 mile round trip 4 days and simply dont have as much time as id like...and they are the ones that need to be doing the policing...thats not our worry until we take over the HOA

I'm interested and throw my hat in for all of this.  If we all continue to say "not my job", nothing will get done.  Maybe, just maybe by setting a good example it might do a lot of good.  Inspiration by demonstration.  I work FT and commute as a lot of you do but an hour here and there is very doable for me.

Shoot me the info please.

I will try and show up tonight (maybe with 3 kids in tow). What kind of power does the HOA have over the builders to get thier lots cleaned up?? I live in Barcelona just found out that our General supper has been laid off. This means that all the empty lots with weeds has noone to be responsible for them. Can we bill back the builders??

thats too bad indeed...he was good to us and even shortly after we moved in we had issues with both toilets continually running after being flushed...he sent someone over...changed out the two parts and all was well...and at that point he could have told us we would have to go through the process of submitting a claim and all that but he didnt...i wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that there arent many homes selling at the moment or if its something worse?....
