03/27/2008 10:20 AM Alert

I have three willow acacias in my back yard.  My dog destroyed our drip system, but the rain seemed to be plenty up until recently, so I have been watering by hand for the last week, week and a half. (slow hose drip at 6-12" from base)

One of our trees was blown over back in Oct (?)  It really just lost it's support, and bent over (young tree) the roots stayed in the ground.  I went out and got the green poles and my husband attempted to put them in the ground, but one of them snapped and he was left with one that wasn't right next to the tree.  My husband ended up strapping the tree partically bent to the pole.  I reminded him we would STILL need to fix it.   He told me then "the tree was going to die" from the fall and he had basically written it off.

I managed to get another pole, but it still isn't in the ground.  my husband has a VERY busy schedule and not much time, and I can't do it by myself.  He tells me we can make time for it on Saturday.

Today I was talking to him, because the support slipped down the tree and it had been blown 1/2 over again last night.  He again tells me the tree is dead.  BUT this time I was able to remind him the trees can survive the falls because we had another one fall and I fixed it back to the supports (had just come loose) and it is fine. . .

Long story longer:

The tree looks like it has had recent growth.  There is new growth sprouting at the bottom, but the mature leaves are yellowing more than my other trees!  How do I save my tree!!!!!!!  I don't think it is dead, but honestly, I don't think it looks that great either.

You see new growth indicates the tree is alive...the yellowing of the leaves could be a result of shock to the roots...some may have been damaged when it fell over..but then the you state all 3 are yellowing out...cold damage? Or irregular watering....

Do you see new growth on any of the bracts where the leaves fell off?

A very simple way to tell if any part of the tree is dying or dead is to scrape the bark on the trunk and any branch where the leaves are yellowing...use your fingernail and "gently" scrape the bark abt. a 1/4"...if you see green..it's still viable..if you see brown...on the trunk the tree is dead..on a branch/limb...you can prune that out...

Also, how long and often are you watering?

Placement of the hose should be slightly outside of the canopy ...this encourages the roots to search for water away from the trunk...making the tree roots more stable and better able to support the tree.

Hope this helps.....

these are very hardy trees as they are native to Austrailian desert.  Maybe overwatering is causing the yellow leaves.  Try making it upright  and cut back on the water, say every 4 days and see if that helps.
