Muslim ethnic Albanians move into the Christian Serbian provence of Kosovo over generations. Now they create a Muslim Albanian country and break away from Serbia with US support. If we support this action (which we have), than how will we be able to oppose them if ,in a few decades ,a Hispanic majority decides to create an independent nation in the Southwestern US, as some groups have already advocated?

A civil war.

If that's the case, I may have to start liking guns.

No way! Todays America does not have the grit for a Civil War. Can you imagine the press if the Civil War happened today? 1 - Whats the exit strategy? 2 - It's a war for cotton! 3 - There are no slaves ,it's all a lie! 4 - What right do we have to impose our will on the south? 5 - Impeach Lincoln!

I say we annex Mexico and make it states 51-56.  All of them are going to be here anyway, eventually.

Good heavens, why?

We had the chance when General Winfield Scott marched through the streets of Mexico City after the Battle of Chapultepec.  We could have taken it all at that time, and even then the decision was "heck no."  Instead, we purchased portions that allowed us to have the land we have today (with the exception of the land we're livin' on, which was purchased five years later).

I suppose the main difference between Hispanics seceding from the United States and taking several states with them, is that in Kosovo, the decision was made following years of "ethnic cleansing."  Nobody here is slaughtering folks just because they look a certain way.  While I'm not sure what message our acceptance of that declaration of independence sends, I think the situation in Kosovo is far different than a hypothetical future situation in Hispanic-majority states.

The intent of my post was to ask, that if we go on record in support of a minority that carves out a portion of a country and declares itself an independent nation, are we not opening up a Pandora's box? A number of nations have not supported the action for that very reason.

A number of nations have groups, some large, some small, that are separatist movements with grievances against their governments. A few that come to mind are Russia, China, France, Spain, Cyprus, Sri Lanka, The Philippines, and Canada. Are we going to be consistent and support their efforts. What about the movement ,years ago that encouraged black Americans (who had ample reason to be dissatisfied with their treatment in the past) to move to several states, become a majority, and declare independence? Would the US government like it if other nations supported such an action?

You are correct all we have now is a nation full of pusssies, in 95 in the BS Bosnian war, you have no idea what the stint of it was.  The Serbs had been there forever, Croats move in, won't give the Serbs credit, things to that nature, so we get ringside seats to an ethnic cleansing on both sides.  The US has always hated muslims plus we have a weapons deal with Croatia so bang zoom to the moon Alice pack your stuff your headin to Bosnia haha

Yeah, I have to agree with hastings and LampLite, we don't have what it takes to face a civil war, really we don't! Think about, we would have to give up certain convenieces, like say... housing and not having bullets fly through the walls of our homes and so on! We really are a nation full of people who "support our troops" as long as the troops are the only one's facing real imminent danger?!

I do support our troops, that's why they need to be over here preparing for the civil war, which is on the edge of happening! The issue comes in because a civil war means that even the troops would be divided.

I have been watching this story passively, which is not my usual approach to something this relevent (that's just the mainstream media coverage of it I guess), but just from what I have seen already, we could be facing a real wake up call as to what our government supports. It is obvious from the few threads here already that we do not, as a people, necessarily support the seperation. How will we handle it if the immigrant or other members of the hispanic community decide to break off? Wow, what an extremely interesting question! Especially since we do not have even close to enough military personell to handle something of that magnitude. Interesting...very interesting!

Rare but in this case i disagree. I fully support Kosovo just as i did Slovenia,Macedonia,Croatia, Montanegro, and Bosnia who all broke away from Serbia. Yugoslavia was never a real country but a creation. The Serbs who ran it did a rotten job of protecting the rights of others. The Serbs were overthown in all those countries for a very good reason. When 90% of your country breaks away in war after war their has to be a reason behind it.

Lamplite, that gun is freakin awesome!

Thomas Jefferson said that he expected the US to go through a civil war every few years. It's amazing that we have had only one. Most of this relates to the restructuring of our government every 4-8 years. Which for some reason we can't seem to elect someone with a backbone. Bush has stuck to his guns with the middle east yet he was too gentle with our enemies. To break an enemies resolve or will to fight you have to hit them hard. The US hasn't fought a war to win since WW2 where we hit the Japanese so hard with two atom bombs and everything else we had breaking their resolve to fight. Had we done this with the middle east we wouldn't have the problems we do now. Fighting a war like the French with our hands tied behind our backs and our legs in the air is no way to win. With lawyers and press following our soldiers around 24/7 trying to make a name for themselves by dragging a soldier through the mudd, what the hell does everyone expect? The Nancy Pelosis and Hillary Clintons, need to shut the hell up and let our boys do their jobs, instead they are worried about how many pork and corn votes they can buy for the next coming election!

And so it starts. With the support of Russia, the Abkazia region of Georgia has appealed for recognition as an independent nation, citing Kosovo as a precedent. One down, _____ to go!
